Collecting a patent involves 3 main steps. They are having a constant persistent effort, a complete knowledge of the process and most importantly an original idea. The idea and the efforts to be put in are your responsibility. The process involves 3 major steps. They are discussed as follows-

1. Determine the type of patent- There are 3 types of patents.1st one is the Utility Patent. The United States Patent and Trademark office defines it as one that is "issued for the invention of a new and useful process, machine, manufacture, or composition of matter".2nd one is the Design Patent. It is defined as a new, original and ornamental design for an article of manufacture. The 3rd one is called the Plant Patent which is basically used for having a new and distinct asexually reproduced plant organism.

2. Search existing patents-This involves an extensive search of the existing patents to confirm whether or not your idea has already been patented or any other person is looking to patent your idea. It is advisable if one takes the help of a patent attorney or an agent for this purpose. Depending on the age of the patents their information is available either in print or in a micro film. Besides the information can also be attained in the official website of Patent and Trademark Office (PTO).

3. Patent application is to be completed-For this purpose you need to download the form from the PTO website. Depending on the type of patents you apply for, you have to file in the summary of your invention, various claims regarding the use of your inventions, a sketch of your invention, and the method of creating the invention. The application fees might also have to be paid at this time.
Collecting a patent is a task that requires a great deal of time and thus you need to have patience to be successful in this regard.
